The Power Of Goals

Each year I like to set goals. Normally I do it in October for some reason. I’ll take a day off work and go somewhere like a library in a nearby city, re-read Covey’s 7-Habits goal setting stuff and Tony Robbins goal chapter in Unlimited Power and write up a set of goals.

For some reason I never did that last year, but I’ve had some goals percolating in my head for the last few weeks. So on the second I started a blog post listing them. Mostly they were things I wanted to learn. Skills to acquire. My last post listed my goals for 2007.

Here’s the power part: Before I’d even finished the post I’d accomplished part of one of the goals, and now I’ve accomplished part of three of the goals.

I created the wiki, though I haven’t transfered from Voodoo pad. I find I’m moving more and more record keeping online, because I don’t carry a laptop with me any more. My mail is mostly webmail. My news reading is mostly on the web now, even though I really like NetNewsWire. So moving my notes and to dos from Voodoo Pad, a wiki application, to a real web wiki just makes sense. And it is a one-click install on Dreamhost.

I just got off the phone with a Dentist and made an appointment for the 16th at 8 AM.

Yesterday I also bought 2 FrontSight certificates off eBay to allow the Mrs and I to go. When I get them in the mail, I’ll contact FrontSight and hopefully book for the first weekend in February. Then I’ll make flight and hotel arrangements.

One problem I have with accomplishing my goals is reviewing them. I think I will put them on the front page of my wiki. And I’m going to post status at the beginning of each month to this blog. I just set up a reoccurring event in my iCal to send me an email the first of each month.

Dr. Randy Bell. He doesn’t look like George Clooney. 🙂 He’s an elder at my church and the first dentist I thought about.

Hey, Scarlett! I want a dentist that looks like George Clooney. I don’t really think George is all that good looking, but since everyone else does, it would make anyone I told envious–probably including Dr. Bell’s wife. You’ve got to share his name. (Er, not necessarily here, since then he might have too many new patients to see me.)

No, i’m not in love with Clooney either, I guess I just find it interesting that he looks like him (not exactly, of course). 🙂 Call me sometime and I’ll tell you his name. He’s a great dentist.
