I subscribe to Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox and today he asked for sugesstions of the top 10 mistakes traditional websites and weblogs make. Here’s my response.
Mistakes by traditional sites:
Putting sign-up for newsletter fields in places traditionally reserved for search boxes. I don’t know how many times I’ve come to a site and thought I was searching and got a bad email address error.
Weblogs:
No about me, for new users.
Not having auto-discovery for RSS/Atom feeds
No next/previous post links on individual message pages.
No pagination of post lists. You can’t navigate backwards in time through all posts.
Opening all external links in another window.
Those are the ones that jump out at me. I might send in more later.
Now of course I need to fix my blog for these.
